Setup

Use a full-size goal with a goalkeeper. Position cones 20-25 metres from goal in a semi-circle across the edge of the penalty area. Players queue behind each cone with balls. On rotation, each player takes a touch to set themselves and shoots from distance. Focus on technique, power, and accuracy. Collect balls between rotations and switch shooting positions regularly.

Coaching Points

  • 1Plant your standing foot alongside the ball, not too far away
  • 2Strike through the laces for power, through the centre of the ball
  • 3Keep your body over the ball to keep the shot down
  • 4Follow through completely with your kicking leg
  • 5Aim for the corners, not straight at the goalkeeper
  • 6Use both feet, develop your weaker foot for unpredictability

Variations

  • Add defenders who apply passive pressure
  • Include different set-ups (laid-off pass, loose ball, dribble and shoot)
  • Require specific techniques (inside foot curl, outside foot)
  • Add conditions like weak foot only or first-time shooting
  • Create shooting zones with different point values for accuracy

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I improve my shooting power?

Power comes from technique and timing, not just leg strength. Strike through the laces with a locked ankle, plant your standing foot close to the ball, and follow through completely. Core strength and hip rotation also contribute significantly to shooting power.

When should I shoot from distance in a match?

Shoot from distance when the defence is compact and no clear passing options exist, when the goalkeeper is off their line, when you have space and time outside the box, or when the opposition expects you to pass.

How do I keep long-range shots on target?

Keep your body over the ball when striking, avoid leaning back. Strike through the centre or top half of the ball to keep it down. Practice regularly to develop muscle memory for the correct technique.

What is the best technique for long-range shooting?

Use your laces for power, strike through the centre of the ball, plant your standing foot alongside the ball, keep your head down, and follow through towards your target. Timing the strike as the ball sits perfectly is crucial for accuracy and power.
