U13-U14U15+

Setup

Use half a pitch with two goals. Divide players into two teams. Start with one team in possession attacking towards a goal. When they lose possession, they must immediately transition to defend, either pressing to win the ball back within 5 seconds or recovering into defensive shape. The opposition counter-attacks to the opposite goal. Emphasise the immediate response when possession is lost.

Coaching Points

  • 1Press immediately when possession is lost, do not allow thinking time
  • 2Nearest player presses the ball, others cut passing lanes
  • 3If the ball cannot be won back quickly, recover into defensive shape
  • 4Communicate loudly during transitions, organise quickly
  • 5Sprint to recover positions, maximum intensity required
  • 6Recognise when to press and when to drop off

Variations

  • Add conditions like must win ball back within 5 seconds for bonus point
  • Create zones where counter-pressing is mandatory
  • Include numerical advantages or disadvantages
  • Add transition triggers (e.g., lost tackle, misplaced pass)
  • Progress to full-pitch scenarios with multiple transition moments

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a transition in football?

A transition is the moment when possession changes from one team to the other. Attacking transitions occur when you win the ball, defensive transitions when you lose it. How teams handle these moments often determines match outcomes.

What is counter-pressing?

Counter-pressing, or gegenpressing, is immediately pressing to win the ball back when possession is lost. Teams press aggressively for 5-7 seconds to regain possession whilst the opposition is disorganised, often winning the ball in dangerous areas.

How do I teach defensive transition?

Teach players to react immediately when possession is lost. The nearest player presses, others cut passing lanes or recover positions. Practice scenarios where players must switch from attacking to defending instantly, building automatic responses.

Why are transitions important in football?

Transitions are critical moments where teams are often disorganised. Winning the ball back quickly through counter-pressing or preventing counter-attacks through recovery runs can be the difference between winning and losing matches.
